Culture And Memory
We aim to run a yearlong project exploring, uncovering and sharing British-Bajan heritage in Birmingham. The project will involve monthly community heritage workshops and cookery groups, recording and preserving Bajan culture, engaging more younger members of our community, and the wider public in understanding our heritage. Our heritage workshops will incorporate storytelling, with elders sharing personal anecdotes, historical accounts, and traditional folklore, transmitting cultural knowledge and values. These stories will be recorded for wider understanding, and the heritage significance uncovered. Bajan cookery classes will explore heritage through food, teaching traditional dishes and their cultural significance. As part of the project we will produce a cookery book, sharing the history and cultural significance of Bajan cuisine with a wider public audience. By sharing and actively participating in these practices, the Bajan community in the Midlands will bring to light and preserve our cultural legacy for future generations.
