The Cab Road Tunnel

Our project will reveal and investigate the history of the Cab Road tunnel beneath Brighton Train Station. Built by the Victorians as a road for horse-drawn hackney cabs in 1841, it has since fallen into disuse, though it still intrigues and engages visitors when made available to visit. We will engage the residents of Brighton’s Phoenix Estate - one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the city centre - to research, learn about and document the Cab Road’s history, making it more available to curious visitors and residents, and laying down a history for the tunnel, which does not currently exist in an accessible form. The project will give residents of Phoenix Estate the chance to develop knowledge and skills, produce a new heritage resource, and to celebrate local heritage for the wider community.
