Culture And Memory
The Gansey Gathering will bring the gansey back to Plymouth. This unique heritage garment is a fishing jumper worn in the 19th and early 20th century. The Plymouth iteration of this jumper has been lost in time. This project will provide an inspiring and fun place for sixty people to learn to knit their very own gansey from a pattern we will produce whilst learning about the working class maritime heritage of Plymouth. It will also create environmental stewards and volunteers through exploring sustainable fashion like knitting and ocean literacy. Gansey Gathering will run a social media campaign to promote the gansey and a pop-up exhibition at community venues around the city. Then we will accession a gansey and images of the project into the Box collection for future generations. It will lay the foundations for The Conscious Sisters to support women who want to knit for money.
