The Great London Plane Tree of Ely Conservation Project.

The project will conserve a heritage tree of national importance, The Great London Plane Tree of Ely, ensuring its vigorous good health continues long into the future. The tree is historically significant, and at over 350 years old is recognised as the largest London Plane in the UK, and one of the originals. The tree was listed in the Top 50 Great British Trees by The Tree Council in 2002. The project will install new bracing to provide support, carefully prune the tree, and add real-time data monitoring. This will be the first time these particular techniques will have been used in the UK, providing a case study for conserving heritage trees throughout the country. The tree and associated heritage will be made more accessible to visitors, with several events organised each year, enabling visitors to enjoy the tree, promoting awareness of heritage tree conservation and the history of Ely.
