The Great North Somerset Bat Project

North Somerset boasts important habitat for several bat species, including nationally rare greater and lesser horseshoe bats. Development pressures and a lack of information about their habitats threatens these species. For three years, the Council has been engaging with residents on a citizen science project to identify the extent of bat activity across our region and inform conservation planning. The project is on the precipice of being self-sufficient and maintainable. Expanding and involving more people this year will enable the remaining 60% of NS to be surveyed and achieve coverage of 50% additional areas. Our goal is to equip participants with knowledge about local bat species, data collection skills, and an understanding of how development can be designed to minimise impact on wildlife. We will collaborate with schools, community groups, and landowners to raise awareness of NS’s natural heritage and the significance of bats, thereby fostering a connection with nature.?
