We want to save a vital part of the North East’s cultural heritage before its knowledge is lost. Rapper sword dancing depends on a supply of specialised swords, but the craft of making them now rests with one remaining maker, Frank Lee (80), with no clear succession. Our project will prevent the loss of this critically endangered craft by transforming it from a largely hidden skill into a documented and shared regional asset. By preserving this knowledge and working with partners, we aim to open pathways to future skills training, laying the groundwork for longer-term apprenticeship or training models. Through public engagement we will also create a legacy of communities, including young people, engaged and connected to this vibrant craft and dance heritage, and increase wider understanding of its roots in the North East’s coalfield history.
