The Lights of Leamington: Switched on Stories
The ‘Lights of Leamington: Switched on Stories’ aims to research and preserve the heritage of a significant cultural festival held in Leamington from 1951 to 1961. It attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors and rivalled the Blackpool Illuminations. Now a resurgence of enthusiasm for a new physical light festival has led to funding being secured to stage it from 14-23 February 2025. Alongside the 2025 festival will be a heritage project which documents the festival’s history, and significance of light festivals for our wider community. It will foster community engagement and create a legacy for future generations. The project will include community Open Days, oral histories, historically themed events and diverse cultural engagement in light festival heritage. Activities will culminate in an indoor and outdoor exhibition in Jephson Gardens, the original festival site; a commemorative film; permanent information stands in Jephson Gardens; podcasts and a community lights history pamphlet.
