The Marshlander: A Rolling Legacy

The WWII armoured wagon, a key wartime artifact of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway (RH&DR), is being restored for the RH&DR Centenary in 2027. Previously reconstructed in the 1990s using a plywood replica, it deteriorated, leading to a renewed effort to create a durable replica using modern materials. Early work included CAD drawings and shot-blasting, but the project stalled due to frame corrosion and COVID-19. Recent progress with detailed specifications and costings has brought it back on track, with restoration costs estimated at £28,176.83. The project will preserve wartime history, enhance visitor experiences with reenactments and exhibits, and engage the community through educational workshops. It links RH&DR’s heritage to broader WWII and local climate change narratives, creating a lasting educational and cultural legacy. Support will ensure this unique artifact continues to inspire and educate future generations.
