As 2025 is Railway 200, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the modern railway in the UK, and is also the 150th anniversary of the world famous Settle to Carlisle line opening in Yorkshire and Cumbria, we wish to carry out primary research to capture the memories of residents who have lived near current and former stations on the line. This will be through a mixture of memory banks and one-to-one interviews, carried out by volunteers trained in research methods. It will include what impact the railway had on these communties as well as the affect of the station closures, recording people's stories to preserve for for posterity. The project will result in a series of 21 short videos on the history of all the current and former stations from Settle Junction to Carlisle Citadel, which will be shared for free on our YouTube channel and Facebook page.
