Culture And Memory
The Boldon Colliery Heritage Group aims to preserve and celebrate the proud mining and military heritage of Boldon Colliery through the Time and Toil project. At its heart is the creation of a permanent public monument featuring the restored 1956 memorial clock—honouring those who worked the mines and served in wartime. Alongside this, we will capture oral histories, curate a digital archive, and deliver educational programmes to connect younger generations with their community’s past. The project will also provide opportunities for local people to develop skills, volunteer, and take part in creative and heritage-based activities. By fostering pride, remembrance, and community connection, we want to ensure that Boldon Colliery’s story continues to be shared and valued for years to come. This project is not just about preserving the past — it’s about building a stronger, more united community for the future.
