Culture And Memory

The Two Alfreds – Finding Black British history during World War II in Lancashire

Using the story of the Alberts family – a Black and mixed-heritage family, living in Lancashire from1880 and whose grandsons were in World War II and both called Alfred – to raise awareness of the contribution of diverse communities in the war and use the project to open conversations with other families in order to preserve their stories. The project will use art, exhibition and writing to engage participants and explore the role of Britain and the Caribbean in various battles between 1939 and 1945. We will create a Caribbean Red Cross care package comparing food in the Caribbean and Lancashire at this time, explore the two Alfreds and their service, the lives of POWs, and the Home Front in Lancashire. The project will produce exhibition material, a series of blogs and written material to celebrate this part of our heritage, and aims to engage participants for future projects.
