The Untold Navratri Story

Shruti Arts will use the 40th anniversary of Leicester’s Navratri to secure, share and strengthen an important yet under-documented form of UK intangible heritage. Through this project, we will ensure that the memories, knowledge and cultural practices held by first-generation organisers are recorded, preserved and made publicly accessible for the first time. As a result, Navratri heritage in Leicester will move from being largely undocumented and at risk, to a recognised, accessible and valued part of the UK’s cultural record. Communities will gain a deeper understanding of the festival’s history and significance, while younger generations will connect more strongly with their heritage. Participants will develop new skills in oral history, and cultural interpretation, increasing confidence and enabling them to play an active role in sustaining this heritage. This will leave a lasting legacy through a publicly accessible archive, film and exhibition, ensuring “The Untold Navratri Story” continues to be shared.
