The Wake – Sites of Memory

The Wake – Sites of Memory, will involve and empower local communities in London, particularly descendant communities, in a city-wide memorial programme that will make visible the legacy of the Transatlantic Trafficking of Enslaved Africans(TTEA) across the city. Ten community groups will research into the impact of TTEA in their local areas, translating findings into accessible resources such as films and walking trails, that will be shared on a digital platform ensuring broad access and engagement. Up to five groups will then identify locations for a physical memorial marker inspired by ‘Stolpersteine’ - the world’s largest decentralized monument of brass plaques to Holocaust victims - embedding memory into the built environment. These markers will form a visual network across London and beyond, making the impact of slavery visible in the city’s landscape. Through community-led storytelling we will build a lasting tribute to resilience, remembrance, and justice.
