Threads of Heritage: Reviving Kurdish Clothing Traditions

Our organisation aims to preserve the cultural heritage of the Kurdish community in Tyne and Wear through the traditional clothing and embroidery practices of the Badinani and Sorani tribes. We will bring Kurdish women together through traditional clothing practices. We will run bi-weekly sessions teaching embroidery and sewing techniques, share cultural stories, and create a sense of belonging within the community. The project will also promote sustainability by incorporating upcycled materials. We will also document the process through filmed sessions making this heritage accessible to those unable to attend and creating a lasting resource. The project will culminate in two community celebrations, showcasing the garments created and strengthening connections between the Kurdish community and the wider public. This initiative will connect different generations, bring the women of the Kurdish community together, promote cultural pride, and establish a foundation for ongoing heritage preservation, and continue traditions for years to come.
