Tides and Tales secures the At Risk history of Plymouth’s ‘Forgotten Corner,’ the East End, home of the city’s earliest waterside industries, shaped by a diverse, working class community. Inspired by NLHF funded projects, the community wants to take direct action in preserving their heritage - capturing, protecting and sharing their maritime history by collecting oral histories and ephemera that tell the story of their maritime past. They will curate a portable exhibition and digital archive (postcards, letters, photographs) to travel through their community, reaching across diverse community groups and spaces. The project will develop a model for community-led heritage co-creation in working-class neighbourhoods, sharing a proven methodology for engaging people who don’t typically access heritage - particularly those living in areas of deprivation - supporting them to become curators of their own history. It will help build a stronger sense of place and foster greater community pride and cohesion.
