UKAFF - celebrating 30 years: Mother Tongues - stories that ignite generations

2028 will be the 30th anniversary of the UK Asian Film Festival (UKAFF). Our vision is to ensure that the festival’s unique cultural heritage is no longer dispersed, ageing, or at risk of being lost, but is preserved, celebrated and accessible for generations. Through a new documentary, digital archive and exhibition, we will document the untold stories of pioneering South Asian filmmakers, audiences and community trailblazers, capturing first-hand memories before they disappear. 20 trained volunteers (aged 18-35 years) will gain oral-history, archiving and interpretation skills, strengthening both community connection and the heritage workforce. UKAFF’s history—shaped by migration, resilience, activism, creativity and identity—will be made publicly available through stimulating events (in 3 regions), a high-quality documentary film and permanent online archive and exhibition. Our long-term aim is to embed South Asian film heritage within the UK’s national story, increasing inclusion, pride and understanding: ensuring UKAFF’s legacy is safeguarded, shared and valued.
