Un-Shuttered – LGBTQ+ Histories Hidden in Plain Sight

Through Un-Shuttered – LGBTQ+ Histories Hidden in Plain Sight, Radiate Arts aims to reveal, record and share LGBTQ+ heritage that is often overlooked within Chester’s historic landscape. The project will support LGBTQ+ people and allies to explore meaningful places through outdoor photography workshops, guided walks and a short reflective writing course, capturing personal stories, memories and lived experiences connected to Pride, belonging and community. By combining photography with reflective writing, participants will create images and first-person narratives that uncover how LGBTQ+ histories are embedded in Chester’s streets, gardens, buildings and social spaces. These creative outputs will be shared through a public exhibition and celebration, making under-represented heritage visible, accessible and valued. The project seeks to ensure LGBTQ+ heritage is recognised as part of Chester’s past and present, while empowering participants with creative skills, confidence and a stronger sense of connection to place.
