Undercurrent: Movement of Jah People

Undercurrent will document and share real histories and personal accounts of working-class and ethnically diverse people and communities connected to the River Lea that are typically not told in post-colonial Britain. Based on extensive research, it presents a unique opportunity to involve residents of all ages and backgrounds as creators and custodians of an important but overlooked period of Luton’s history. It will create a new archive of stories that residents believe should be preserved for future generations. People involved will learn new skills in heritage research and archiving, alongside skills in project management and communications. It will develop their awareness of and interest in community history and equip them with the skills, confidence and creativity to unearth and collate their own stories. It will also enhance related heritage activities, including the Council’s plans to animate the river and get local people outdoors and connecting with nature along the river.
