Culture And Memory
Djurtus United aims to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Cape Verdean community now settled in Leeds. Our project seeks to highlight Cape Verde's historical significance as a key maritime hub during the transatlantic slave trade, connecting Africa, Europe, and the Americas. By documenting oral histories, traditional music, dance, and customs, we will create a vibrant archive that reflects the community’s unique journey and contributions. This initiative will foster greater understanding and appreciation of Cape Verdean culture among Leeds residents, reduce social isolation, and strengthen community ties. Through educational workshops, public exhibitions, and community events, we will ensure that this important heritage is celebrated and preserved for future generations
