Voices of Leeds: Queer Heritage Through Time

Our project aims to create an audio archive of LGBTQ+ history in Leeds, retold from the perspective of the young trans people at The Hangout. By exploring the stories, experiences, and legacies of LGBTQ+ communities in the city, we want to build meaningful connections between the past and the present, helping young people understand the struggles and achievements that have shaped their community. Through this project, twenty young people from Seacroft will engage with sound in creative ways using archival recordings, field recordings, and DJing skills to produce a multi-layered audio archive. Participants will learn how to collect, interpret, and remix historical materials, creating new narratives that reflect their experiences and perspectives. The project will empower young people to explore and celebrate Leeds LGBTQ+ history in a participatory way, while building confidence, technical skills, and a stronger sense of connection to both their local community and its rich LGBTQ+ heritage.
