Waterways
We will work with women and their families to create greater understanding of waterways, industrial heritage and the journeys of their forefathers to the UK. We will focus on the canal stretch near Sparkhill, using that as a catalyst to share the industrial heritage and shared significance of waterways from their countries of origin and the UK. Mangla Dam is a key landmark for arrivals from Pakistan in the 60s and some migrants settled in Sparkhill. People from Bangladesh have a rich heritage of waterways and there are early accounts of trading by boat from the 17th Century in the Sylhet region. A small number of people from Sylhet (Bangladesh) first arrived in the UK as merchant seamen using the waterways. The project wants to achieve cultural crossover in sharing the richness of water heritage amongst all communities. The canals are an asset and was central to industry and migration.
