Nature And Landscape

Wetlands and Reedbeds 2. This is a Priority Habitat for the Greater London Authority (GLA).

The Friends of Clapham Common and Wild Clapham, both registered charities, have come together to design and construct a new wetland with reedbeds adjacent to Eagle Pond on Clapham Common. The purpose of the project is twofold: 1. To renovate an existing, derelict site (approximately 1000 sq.m) to provide sustainable habitat for aquatic and invertebrate wildlife, focusing on frogs, newts and toads, and those invertebrates which spend parts of their lifecycle underwater - dragonflies and damselflies. The planting schemes will include a reintroduction of lost species with essential food-foliage for the caterpillars of butterflies and moths. 2. To provide an educational resource for local schools to study aquatic wildlife through the seasons. There will be a viewing deck and boardwalk with QR codes attached, offering season-relevant information and links to other conservation agency websites. The viewing deck will be purpose built to allow dipping for tadpoles and other aquatic life.
