Culture And Memory
With over 200 nationalities and 150 languages spoken in Brent, it can be very difficult for young people to understand their own roots and connect to their heritage, leaving them confused and isolated. Who am I? enables up to 40 young people in Brent to trace their family’s origin and celebrate stories, food and festive customs from their culture. Young people will research and collect stories, photos and videos to make a mini heritage website representing the history and diversity of the local area. They will also organise cultural celebration events, a guided heritage walk, podcasts and create a virtual cookbook celebrating their food heritage. This project enables young people to find a sense of belonging, pride and identity, as well as improved wellbeing, resilience, confidence and connection with their local community. They will also learn essential and unique skills to raise their aspirations and to support employability.
