Windrush: The Music, The Sound, The Legacy

Through our project, we aim to capture and preserve the oral histories of Caribbean-born community leaders, DJs and musicians who settled in Wolverhampton between the 1950s and 1980s. These individuals profoundly shaped the city’s cultural and musical landscape during an era of social exclusion. Our activities include transcribing and editing recorded interviews to create accurate transcripts, digitising audio and video recordings and curating a digital booklet that features key excerpts, images and multimedia. This booklet will be shared with community members, libraries and schools, fostering engagement and encouraging others to share their own stories. By celebrating resilience, creativity, and identity, we will strengthen community pride and build intergenerational connections, ensuring this rich cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.
