Our proposal will reimagine an existing annex of Blackburn Youth Zone that was built as Blackburn’s first gas works in the early 1800s and then became the town’s first-ever electric power station. It will transform the building into a state-of-the-art aspirations and skills hub that will embed the stories and heritage of the building and enrich and expand our facilities to provide the very best support for local young people, whoever they are and whatever their backgrounds. Each project element will be supported by a skills development programme that enables young people to learn and practice heritage skills and connect with local manufacturing companies that produce heritage artefacts on a large scale. Our plans capture the imaginations of the young people who use B&DYZ and present a unique opportunity to involve them in bringing its heritage to life.
