Woolovers

We want to run an intergenerational project for The Sharing Memories Group of older people and other community groups underserved by heritage in The Holme Valley, to collaboratively discover and celebrate the woollen & textile heritage of West Yorkshire. We will teach the history of the industry to our group members, schoolchildren and other adults, bringing it to life through learning and passing on textile crafts: spinning, weaving, felting and newer techniques like yarn bombing. We will create our own heritage scene, for a vibrant final exhibition, entitled “Woolovers”. Central to our exhibition will be the character of Sir John Ramsden (1699-1769), an influential Huddersfield landowner who built the Cloth Hall in Huddersfield for individuals to trade cloth. Our project and exhibition will form part of Huddersfield Woven Festival 2025. We hope to achieve better community cohesion and a legacy in memories, experiences and an archived film documenting the project.
